Occupational Therapy for Dyspraxiain San Ramon, Livermore, and Tracy, CA
If your child has dyspraxia, the world can feel out of sync with their intentions. Despite their intelligence, there is often a disconnect between what their brain wants to do and how their body carries out movement. This can lead to frustration with activities that require coordination, from getting dressed to catching a ball.
At Language Essentials, our pediatric occupational therapists help children with dyspraxia build coordination, improve body awareness, and gain confidence so they can participate more independently and successfully in daily routines at home, at school, and in the community.
What Is Dyspraxia?
Dyspraxia, also known as developmental coordination disorder (DCD), is a neurological condition that interferes with your child’s motor planning, or the brain’s ability to organize and sequence movements when carrying out tasks. While most of us move automatically, a child with dyspraxia often has to consciously think through each step of an action, which can lead to fatigue and frustration.
Dyspraxia can affect your child’s ability to organize the individual steps of a multi-part task, such as tying shoes. It also impacts fine motor skills like handwriting or using utensils, and gross motor skills such as balance and coordination.
Dyspraxia is a lifelong condition, but with early intervention from a pediatric occupational therapist, your child can learn strategies that help them participate more comfortably and confidently in daily life.
Signs Your Child May Be Struggling With Dyspraxia
If your child consistently shows the following, it may be a sign of dyspraxia:
- Delays reaching physical milestones such as rolling, sitting, crawling, or walking
- Struggles using buttons, zippers, snaps, or utensils
- Trouble completing handwriting, cutting, or drawing tasks
- Challenges catching, throwing, jumping, or riding a bike
- Problems maintaining balance or bumping into objects
- Difficulty sitting upright for extended periods
- Frustration maintaining coordination during activities
How Occupational Therapy Helps Children With Dyspraxia
At Language Essentials, our occupational therapists help turn movements that feel difficult and frustrating into skills that feel more natural and efficient. By focusing on the “jobs of childhood,” such as playing, writing, and getting dressed, we support your child in improving coordination, building core strength, and developing the motor planning skills needed for daily life. Through engaging, play-based activities, we help your child build confidence and participate more independently in their everyday routines.
