Pediatric Occupational Therapy for Sensory Processing Difficultiesin San Ramon, Livermore, and Tracy, CA
For some children, the input they receive through their senses can feel confusing, overwhelming, or hard to organize. When this happens, it may affect their ability to concentrate, regulate emotions, and enjoy everyday activities.
At Language Essentials, our pediatric occupational therapists help children who experience sensory processing difficulties build the skills they need to feel more comfortable, engaged, and confident in their daily environments.
What Is Sensory Processing?
Sensory processing occurs when your child’s brain takes in information from their senses, organizes it, and makes meaning from it so they can respond comfortably to the world around them. When this process works smoothly, your child can stay focused, adjust to new environments, participate in daily activities, and regulate their emotions with greater ease.
Signs Your Child Needs Help with Sensory Processing
Every child shows sensory processing challenges differently, but some common signs include:
- Reacting strongly to sensations, such as covering their ears at everyday sounds or refusing specific clothing textures
- Appearing unaware of things around them, such as not noticing their name being called or barely reacting to temperature or touch
- Seeking extra sensory input, such as touching everything nearby, spinning frequently, or jumping over and over
If you recognize these signs in your child, reach out to Language Essentials to schedule an evaluation with a pediatric occupational therapist.
How Occupational Therapy Supports Supports Sensory Processing Difficulties
At Language Essentials, a pediatric occupational therapist begins with an evaluation to understand your child’s sensory needs, strengths and challenges. From there, a personalized treatment plan is created for your child that helps them feel more comfortable with sensory input and more confident in their daily routines.
Therapy is play-based and may include:
- Playing movement games that help your child stay calm and comfortable when the environment starts to feel too busy.
- Exploring hands-on materials like play-dough or putty to help your child become comfortable with different textures.
- Taking short breaks when sensations feel too strong, then returning to activities once your child feels comfortable again.
- Providing you with simple strategies to use at home so your child can apply what they’ve learned in therapy to everyday routines.
